MP3: Tego Calderón - "Tu le diste al switche" (Pernett's Cumbiambero Remix)

Please, allow us to remind you that Pernett is one of today’s most intriguing and creative personas in Tropical music. The Colombian musician is way more than your average ‘Latin Fusion Exotic’ act (you know, the kind that European festivals love), this guy has a dynamic scope of making anything he touches into something truly special. This time, he surprises us with a killing ‘cumbiambero’ remix to another master with an afro, our father Tego Calderón. “Tu le diste al switche” is a rare unreleased track by Tego; actually, it’s a demo that leaked prior to The Underdog/El Subestimado and never made it into the album. The catchy song is actually a tiraera to Hector “El Father”, who is now devoted Christian rapper, “pide la bendicion que llego tu papa.” Tego has spent almost four years cooking his next album, which won’t come out until 2011. Last time we spoke to him he told us he was listening to Rita Indiana y Los Misterios, and claims to be Lido Pimienta’s adoptive father, we couldn’t be more excited.

Pernett feat. Lido Pimienta & Quantic Cover New Order's "Blue Monday"

This is a very special version of New Order’s “Blue Monday” by the always charming and full of layers Pernett in collaboration with fellow Colombian Lido Pimienta and Quantic. The dancehall anthem gets a twist on the hands of this Colombian genius, who keeps expanding his horizon so extraordinarily that he might just be the most creative guy in Tropical music today. Just like the dazzling Fonograma-featured “Perikitus!” Pernett continues to make “watery delicious fireworks.” This time it’s 7 minutes of steamy landscape accompanied by Lido’s emblematic soothing voice.

Featured: Pernett - "Perikitus!"

Sometimes I write good things on Twitter; recently I described Pernett’s “Perikitus!” as a track as waterly delicious as Animal Collective’s “My Girls.” And that could be read as a stretch from my part, because one song is about birds and the other about capturing our current state of individualism, see they’re not too far away from each other, and yes they run through the same vein music-wise. Pernett sings about Colombia in the most colorful and embryonic ways. If your ears need some refreshment, Pernett’s latest El Mago is for you. But we’ll get to the whole album soon; in the meantime let’s get to one of my favorite songs of the moment, and one of the very best from our Fonogramaticos Vol..6 compilation.

“Perikitus!” is a fascinating poetic piece about birds, wings and colors. “Vuelan periquitos sobre Barranquilla, cometas de colores que el cielo estampillan, flores del viento que cantan felices…” That phrase alone should be enough to stimulate the senses, if not, force your way into it, at this point what’s important is to get you floating one way or another. It’s the sound fluttering its surrounding space, a kind of self-aware beauty that celebrates its own march; notice the fireworks between the song’s layers, notice its whimsicality! This is flat-out gorgeous. I found this video over at YouTube, which Pernett uses as visual background for his live shows, very fitting.
