Multiple changes of exquisite wardrobe (from goth glam to elegant aristocrat), stellar projections of space, and an overall aura of darkness (take a look at those sexy-creepy shots of Mamacita and Sofía Oportot glamorously dressed in black) take place in quieroStar's video for “Destrucción total,” which features compatriot and sensational progressive pop diva Mamacita as a vocal guest. Kitschy as it comes and sensually defiant, “Destrucción total” is a highly infectious, bubbling synth-fueled track. Mamacita's vocoded entrance sets a weird tone (Mamacita vocoded?), subtly embellished by Oportot's serene performance. Meanwhile, the sticky chorus merges their voices and transforms this track into something truly great -dramatic electropop that invites you to the dance floor and confidently intones “sólo te pido que no me dejes de amar.” While we're still waiting quieroStar's Lo Haré Público, “Destrucción total” has got us craving for even more. Mamacita, on the other hand, recently shared the 7'' split Humedad/Sentir Amor with Chilean friends Makaroni, via Ku De Ta.

quieroStar - "Efecto Espejo"
As soon as the video for “Efecto Espejo” opens with a close-up of a pair of lucite heels, you know it’s going to be all about the wardrobe. The camera pans up to reveal white lace tights, a beaded pink leotard with serious shoulder pads (you have to be serious about your shoulder pads), glitzy jewelry, and a glam blonde wig to complete a mannequin on rotating display look that’s closer to Nicki Minaj’s idea of Barbie (if she existed in a John Hughes movie) than Mattel’s. In this saga of waiting by the phone, directed by Nicolás Astorga, quieroStar’s version of Barbz waits longingly but patiently for her man to call, a reflection of the song’s instrumental urgency paired with serene vocals. When the call finally does come, and it’s bad news, our protagonist goes into mourning (in a pink lace veil, of course). Here, the aesthetics veer into Madonna territory, and a strangely heartbreaking alone at the altar scene quickly follows. Though love could not be realized, the song’s chorus suggests that just looking in the mirror will bring our heroine’s love back because she is a reflection of him and the love that they had for one another. (Awww.) But even in the presence of a story as dramatic as the one in this video, all I really care about are the various pink and white leotard ensembles. And that flawless manicure.

Unreleased, Chile
Javiera Mena gave us a hint a few months ago about quieroStar, claiming it was a band that deserved our undivided attention. Indeed, this Chilean trio comprised by Sofia Oportot (“Chofi”), Raul (“Mr. Monster”) and Arturo (“DJ Exxtra Large”) know how to grab one’s attention. In a year in which we hear disco strings in every corner of the continent, this band adds some serious dense melody to the trend, achieving success in the best of Stereo Total or Fangoria’s Un Dia Cualquier En Volcano 3-volume series. It’s got that ‘sadness in the spotlight’ vibe that predominates global kitsch music.
“Efecto Espejo” is the first single out of their upcoming album Lo Hare Publico, which will be available for open download soon. The song is a tribute inside a tribute; it wears its influences with tremendous confidence, ignoring the fact that we’ve probably heard that song before in some way or another, but it’s that thrive for disco rapture what makes this song special. If we were to turn off the disco lights, we would found a warm, vulnerable sweet voice singing to a mirror, not for personal grooming but for self-reflective reason. "Tu imagen en mi, que me hace ver mas linda."
