Video: Esteman - "El Distractor"

We told you he was no one-hit-wonder, Colombia’s new pop heartthrob is a gentlemen making the most glamorous (if theatrical) pop in Latin America. Esteban Meneses, better known as Esteman has new great single to follow “No Te Metas En Mi Facebook” and “La Cosita Tropical”, his latest song “El Distractor” is already a hit in Colombia and is quickly making its way to the rest of the continent. The catchy tune has an equally glossy video directed by Salomon Simhon and Esteman himself; it’s bright and smoky, like Rob Marshall meeting Punch Drunk Love at a Sunday parade. Esteman’s spaghetti legs are to die for, and he knows how to ‘square’ his voice on parallel to his body, like all those great men he mentions on the song. The song has a pretty good English version titled “The Actor.” It’s always weird to use these words, but he was born to do this. There's no official word on the release of his debut album, but it could arrive this very same year.

As we took not on our Panamerika show, Esteman is one of the names that could define 2010 for us. Perhaps the sound itself isn’t that appealing in terms of how we picture this year to sound like, but in mood and spirit Esteman is quite the glory (and the escapism). While Teleradio Donoso and their year’s anthem “Bailar y Llorar” helped us get through the recession last year, Esteban Meneses’ glamorous pop is one step from claiming its emancipation from the subliminal world we’re surrounded by. “No Te Metas A Mi Facebook” is a hit, but Esteman is no one-hit wonder. If only for “La Cosita Tropical” which is pure genius, the guy really knows how to carry his humor and crosses genres, culture, and identities in this hot upcoming single. This is an awesome cut from an acoustic session he recorded with his Esteband last December in Bogota. We’re in urgent need of legitimate popstars, he could be up for such title.

Esteman - "No te metas a mi Facebook"

When we tell you Julieta Venegas is our lost fonogramatica sister it’s for reals, she’s got an awesome taste, or so we think so; just look at our MySpace top friends and Julieta’s top friends and you’ll notice what I’m talking about. If you’re already following her you probably know a bunch of new bands and today she linked her 15,000 followers to Colombia’s Esteman. We don’t get many male solo pop acts and this is an exciting one, Esteban Mateus Williamson is as infectious as one can get. His first single (and probably first hit) is titled “No Te Metas En Mi Facebook”, I was expecting a dull song or at least an overcute piece too sweet to feel sympathy for, I was right... in part.

Esteman recollects pop’s norms and makes beautiful music, just like Capullo’s “No Conectado”, he has made a wonderful song on social networking and it’s so bouncy and saucy that it bursts in virtue from begining to end. It could’ve been an annoying song (many will find it annoying), but the guy masters his music with Timberlake-meets-Glee charisma. This is pop in excess on a thrilling up-tempo string (something we also love from Emmanuel Horvilleur), and look at this video, it’s wonderfully choreographed and to its fortune, very commercial. “Cuando escribas melodrama, no me lo hagas en el wall.”
