MP3: El Remolón (feat. Lido Pimienta) - "Vestido"

We last heard this duo on El Remolón's 2010 EP with the slower marching song "Basta Ya (Todos somos inmigrantes),"where Lido gave a taste of her unique phrasing, and 2012's sassy "Atras". As we wait, eyes bulging with anticipation, for her sophomore LP, La Papessa, BA-scenester, El Remolón, has returned with his fifth release, Selva, and a tantalizing appetizer of a more mature-sounding diva. Her vocals are getting looser and bolder. Meanwhile, the cumbia maestro scaffolds the song with a bouncing, but sultry, framework, on top of which Lido gets down to business. This is straight forward, earworm pop. The theme is blatant, the storyline an instant - if somewhat repetitive. There's no mystery here. She'll take off her own heels; but you better get off the end of the bed to help by the time Lido's excellent harmonic refrain returns. You can currently download the mp3 of the track via Soundcloud.

Video: El Remolón - "Flashback"

ZZK Records darling Andrés Schteingart a.k.a El Remolón has made a name for himself amongst producers working within a nebulous aesthetic that encompasses electronic music, ambient, cumbia, and just about any other electronic sound that's evolved out of Latin America in the last couple of years. After releasing the energetic Pangeatico EP (2010), Schteingart this year produced the electro-cumbia soundtrack to Boxeo Constitución, a documentary exploring the harsh realities of boxing in Argentina alongside Lido Pimienta. He is ready to unveil his next trip. “Flashback” is the first single from his upcoming LP Selva and finds the artist evolving from an electro-ambient producer to a guy who produces tangible songs. The video that comes with it (directed by Ezequiel Mateos) works as El Remolón's first video ever and introduces a character that transports between realities and hallucinations while escaping his lunatic wife through the track's catchy beat.

MP3: El Remolón vs MC Hammer vs Dabrye vs Zonora Point vs Rulio Enriquez (Un Mono Azul cocktail)

Buenos Aires-based DJ and producer, Un Mono Azul, got his start in the Mendoza “tropitech” (he calls it tropitech, I call it electropical) scene and since then has produced a lot of intriguing and expertly mixed and textured music employing a variety of genres that you might not expect to work well together. But Un Mono Azul makes them work, and you can hear for yourself in his recent compilation, Arca, which he describes as “14 of his remixes, edits, mash ups, and other accidents” and as “a way to rescue his little mutants from the end of this era, and from the hard disk of his laptop.”

This particular mash up is a slow grooving amalgam of sound that, despite having so much going on, manages to remain surprisingly quiet and minimalistic. It’s quite impressive, actually. Usually when I have a cocktail with too many ingredients, it makes me sick. But this cocktail goes down nice and easy. Watch out for Un Mono Azul’s Manimal EP to be out on Sub Klub Records soon. Stream: El Remolón - Pangeatico EP

It’s no secret El Remolon (Andres Schteingart) is our favorite crewmember from ZZK Records, his chromatic vision makes distinct catchy beats and that’s how we like our cumbia. We described his last release Pibe Cosmo as “a journey throughout the American continent” and have deeply enjoyed his B-Sides and Mixtapes, but it’s time for a new proper release, the much-anticipated Pangeatico EP. From one spin alone, this sounds as bouncy as one would expect, and energetic enough to correlate it with these mornings of futbol. The 6-track EP features Fantasma and Boogat, and Fonograma favorite Lido Pimienta, who’s been teaming up with many talented people lately, from his work with Los Espiritus, to Pernett and El Hijo de la Cumbia, to having a small guest appearance on one of the tracks in Javiera’s Mena. We’ll get into Pangeatico in depth later, but so far, we’re loving the artwork, its guests, and the intercontinental vibe in this, looks like a nice EP to follow his stellar debut.

El Remolon Remixes Animal Collective. B-Side of Pibe Cosmo

You know El Remolon is my favorite guy from ZZK Records, his stellar Pibe Cosmo (reviewed here) only gets better after recurring spins, according to the Argentinean label's website, he will be releasing a free B-Side made of remixes and mashups. Get a taste of what's to come, four tracks available for download. Among them, Animal Collective's awesome single "My Girls", and a fantastic take on "Violeta" by Violeta. Also, it's great to see the reggaeton beat back on the right hands.
