Mock The Zuma x Crocat - "Caba Beach"

Juarez-based producers, Crocat and Mock the Zuma, combined forces in the collaborative tune "Caba Beach" and recently let it loose for anyone with an Internet connection to enjoy. Pitter-patter drums open the low-key tune until warm, lower-register notes wash over the soundscape and an arpeggiating melody takes the lead. Chopped- and pitch-shifted vocal samples add a feather-light vibe to the tune as they effortlessly synchronize with the melody.

Mock the Zuma's Pocketlee EP on Cocobass Records and Crocat's Meridian EP at NWLA.TV have garnered individual recognition, and with the two reunited on the Lowers Netlabel, they can now showcase their newfound collective merit. While Lowers could just as aesthetically exist in New York as it does in Mexico, it will be interesting to see how they will posture as the digital faces of, let's say, their 'troubled' Juarez.

Two weeks before Girl Talk released All Day, we were already enjoying a set of mashup extravaganza through DJ Golonsh’s D.D.A. Bears! Finally a mashup album from our region that's not cumbia-induced. We’re not sure how ‘secret’ this is, or if he’s attempting a ‘hidden author’ profile on this one, but know this is one of the many projects by Monterrey’s talented producer ‘Bul.’ Like many of his 'mash-the-world' peers, his at the core of a neon-lit culture approaching supreme collision.

DJ Golonosh’s sophomore LP is a party-ready blast; mixing some of the year’s hits (Black Eyed Peas, Katy Perry, Lady Gaga), some earlier works (Madonna, Michael Jackson, the 90s), and some Latin acts (Quiero Club, Molotov, Calle 13, El Gran Silencio). Although not as interesting as Girl Talk itself or El Sueño de la Casa Propia, “Bruneta” shows this is way more than just a “see how many songs you can spot” kind of mix. D.D.A. Bears! El Guincho - FACT Mix 187

We’re still very proud of having one of El Guincho’s 10 hand-made (customed by Pablo Diaz-Reixa himself) tapes for Gorilla vs. Bear’s ‘Gorila Contra Bear Mixtape’, which featured artists from around the world that have inspired him. This time, he made a stunning and revealing mix for FACT Magazine. FACT 187 collects his Iberoamerican influences that go from Ruben Blades to Los Bukis. Click over to FACT for the tracklist.

Earlier this year the Barcelona-based Guinch released the first instalment in his limited edition Piratas de Sudamérica EP series. Recorded at home with deliberately low frequency response then bounced down to the tape, the EP consisted of covers and rearrangements of South American standards and lost classics. This spirit of discovery informs his totally unique FACT mix, wherein he finds incredible, often unlikely psychedelic resonances in traditional music and pop from the Spanish-speaking world, elegantly editing tracks by the likes of Javier Solis, Rolando Laserie and Gloria Lasso into a hypnotic and righteous flow. We also reckon this is the first and last time you’ll hear a Julio Iglesias track on a FACT mix.

Stream: Acorde On - "Dios salve a la reina" (Selena Megamix)

Selena, the undisputed Queen of Tejano (may she rest in peace), is a Texas legend, a goddess and a saint. (Yes, you can be a queen, legend, goddess, and saint all at the same time and all in one sentence. But only if you’re Selena.) People still pay their respects every year on the anniversary of her tragic death, and I’m sure that, if not for the fear of offending La Virgen de Guadalupe, for whom many display shrines in their front yards, a lot of folks would construct even bigger and flashier shrines in honor of Her Holiness the Queen of Tejano. But far better than any gaudy shrine, is Acorde On’s tribute in the form of a megamix.

Acorde On is an interesting character out of San Luis Potosí who, to put it simply, mixes music that he likes. He is also known for performing in a biohazard suit, which we won’t go into because we don’t quite know what that’s about. In his “Dios salve a la reina (Selena Megamix),” he pairs some of Selena’s best songs with driving percussion, while still allowing her voice to remain the focal point. His reverence for Selena is definitely apparent. From the quiet introduction with “Como La Flor” to my favorite, “Si Una Vez,” in which the octave jump at the end of the “ve-i-ve-i-e-i” is further emphasized by a cymbal, to the triumphant ending with “No Debes Jugar,” the mix is a nostalgia-inducing production that will make you want to dig up those old CDs and long for the Golden Age of Selena.

María y José - Mega Calorón Mix

In an effort to keep your summer fresh and full of aural goodies, here is the latest mix from Fonograma favorite María y José. It’s the perfect transition to move away from our Midyear playlists, which we confess were a bit too distracting and strong to write content around them. So while we let these lists sink in for a minute, give yourself a treat with this Mega Caloron Mix (Guaracha Cosmica) from the guy who might be making the year’s most exciting music, from the luminous Espiritu Invisible to the equally moving Kibose EP. Perhaps the most precious minute in this mix comes with Los Espíritus and a very raw demo of a song we’ve been digging lately “Besito en el Ombliguito.”
